Hornberger + Worstell partnered with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson to design a conference and guest center for UCLA that is tailored to a unique purpose: welcoming scholars, innovators, and thought leaders to share and debate ideas that shape the future. The result, which opened in 2016, is a modern building with historic roots and limitless potential.
Public spaces transition seamlessly between indoor and outdoor environments. Twenty-six meeting and event rooms, including a tiered classroom and 750-guest ballroom, are designed for maximum flexibility, hosting a panel discussion on climate change one day and a hands-on robotics demonstration the next—or both simultaneously. The center's 254 guest rooms offer comfortable and contemporary accommodation for visiting experts and other UCLA guests.
Sustainability was a primary focus in the project, which demanded innovations both in design and technology to minimize the facility's energy footprint while maximizing access to natural light. These efforts resulted in the project achieving LEED Platinum status, making it one of only two hotels in the state of California to hold this distinction.
